New players will take India to great heights in cricket: Rajeev Shukla

New Delhi , Sun, 24 Mar 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Mar. 24 (ANI): Union Minister of State for Parliamentary Affairs and senior Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) official Rajeev Shukla on Sunday lauded the achievement of the Indian cricket team in registering a four nil series whitewash against Australia at home, and predicted that new players in the squad would take India to greater heights in international cricket in the near future.

Interacting with media persons after India had registered a six-wicket victory against Australia in the fourth and final Test that was played at the Ferozeshah Kotla cricket ground here, Shukla said: "India's performance today is very big achievement.

I congratulate Dhoni and his team. The team played with each player giving his 100 percent."

"The new players will take the team to new heights. (Cheteshwar) Pujara's performance is appreciable and outstanding. (Pace bowler) Bhuvanesh Kumar's contribution was praiseworthy," he added.

When asked to comment on media reports that this series was Sachin Tendulkar's last in India, Shukla said: "Useless controversies about Tendulkar are wrong. Speculations are not good about Sachin's case. It is his wish to play or to retire."

Shukla, who is also the chairman of the Indian Premier League (IPL) Governing Council, said the sixth edition of the Twenty20 tournament would start as per schedule on April 3.

Shukla was speaking at the end of the third day's play of the Kotla Test. For the record, Australia scored 262 and 164 in their two innings, while India scored 272 and 158 for 4.

All-rounder Ravindra Jadeja was declared the Man of the Match for his eight wickets (in the match) and 43 runs (in the second innings), while Ravichandran Ashwin was declared Man of the Series for his 29 wickets. (ANI)
