Suspected Hizbul militant arrested in UP

New Delhi , Fri, 22 Mar 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Mar. 22 (ANI): Delhi Police on Monday claimed to have foiled a 'fidayeen attack' in the national capital with the arrest of Liyaqat Shah, a suspected Hizbul Mujahideen terrorist, in Uttar Pradesh.

The Special Commissioner of Police (Special Cell), S N Srivastava, said Syed Liyaqat Shah, a resident of Kupwara in Jammu and Kashmir, was apprehended from Gorakhpur two days ago, soon after he entered India through Nepal where he was flown to from Karachi.

"With the arrest of Shah, a fidayeen (suicide) attack in Delhi has been possibly averted," he said, and added that Liyaqat had crossed over to PoK in 1997 where he was trained.

Shah's interrogation led to a raid on a guesthouse in Central Delhi's Jama Masjid area where a contact was waiting for the alleged operative.

A raid was conducted and an AK47 and ammunition were recovered.

The police are on the looking out for more operatives, who might have sneaked in. (ANI)
