Food experts discuss agrarian crisis

New Delhi,Business/Economy, Tue, 19 Mar 2013 IANS

New Delhi, March 19 (IANS) Hunger, genetically modified organism, food security and agrarian crisis were among the issues discussed by experts and activists here in the capital.

"Monoculture of hybrid jowar, corn and rice is an extension of the mono culture of the mind that is at the root of ecological, agrarian and nutritional crisis in India," environmental activist Vandana Shiva said during the dialogue on "India's Zero Hunger Challenge".

Crop monoculture is the practice of growing the same crop year after year. It is widely used in modern industrial agriculture and it allows large harvests from minimal labour.

Shiva said that hybrid monoculture is water intensive and will intensify the water crisis and the vulnerability of agriculture and to climate change.

Former agriculture minister Sompal Shastri said: "In Odisha's districts like Kalahandi and Balangir, households in each hamlet had mobile phones but people went six to seven km to fetch water. I wish their mobile phones could sprinkle water."
