Chennai, Mar 18 (ANI): Students in Tamil Nadu have stepped up pressure on the union government, demanding that India move a resolution against Sri Lanka-for its alleged war crimes against Lankan Tamils-at the United Nation's human rights body meet later this month.
Large student protests are being held across the state even as the Congress-led UPA government tries to hammer out a political consensus with its major ally, the DMK.
Union Ministers A.K. Antony, Ghulam Nabi Azad and P Chidambaram are likely to discuss the issue with DMK chief M Karunanidhi today.
Karunanidhi had earlier threatened to snap ties with the UPA Government saying he felt let down by the government on the issue.
He wants the Centre to amend the proposed UN resolution to incorporate the demand for an international probe and time-bound action against those who may be found guilty of war crimes in Sri Lanka.
Marumalarchi Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (MDMK) leader Vaiko earlier on March 2 pressed his demand for an independent international investigation on the war crimes committed by Sri Lankan military on Tamils. He said the Indian Government should severe all economic ties with Sri Lanka.
External Affairs Minister Salman Khurshid earlier said there should be a transparent probe into Sri Lanka war crimes.
"We are not politicising the matter, we want the Sri Lankan government to help Tamils recover from their wounds. We feel there should be a transparent probe," Khurshid told media in Farrukhabad.
"If the people there have been hurt due to wrongful investigations then transparent action should be initiated against the responsible people," Khurshid added.
Meanwhile, Union Minister V Narayanasamy said the Prime Minister will definitely consider all aspects before taking a decision on the resolution.
The US-sponsored motion puts the island nation in the dock over alleged war crimes and rights violations against Tamil civilians during the final phase of the war against the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE).
The resolution is moved by the US for the second time. Last year, India had supported a similar resolution . (ANI)
