Curfew continues for second day in Srinagar

Jammu And Kashmir,Kashmir, Fri, 15 Mar 2013 IANS

Srinagar, March 15 (IANS) Curfew continued in Srinagar for the second day Friday and in some other towns of the Valley to thwart a shutdown call by separatist groups.

Curfew continued in all the police station areas of Srinagar city for the second day, and authorities also imposed curfew in north Kashmir's Sopore and Trehgam towns, in central Kashmir's Badgam town and south Kashmir's Anantnag and Awantipora towns to thwart the separatists, who had called for a shutdown.

Although no curfew has officially been announced in other towns of the Valley, markets, educational institutions, public transport and other businesses remained closed in response to the shutdown called by the separatist united coordination committee, Muttahida Majlis-e-Mushawarat (MMM).

Tension continued to run high in the Valley Friday because of the fidayeen attack in Srinagar city Wednesday -- an act of terrorism not witnessed in the state in the past three years.

Five CRPF troopers were killed in the attack, which also left six troopers injured. Three civilians also suffered injuries before the two suicide attackers were killed in firing by troops.

Police Thursday arrested another Pakistan national from Chattabal locality of Srinagar city. The man is believed to have been the third accomplice of the fidayeen attackers who succeeded in escaping after the attack.

Police sources said that based on the SIM card details of the two slain guerrillas, a militant guide named Bashir Ahmad has also been arrested from Uri border town in Baramulla district.

There has, so far, been no official confirmation of the identity of the two slain guerrillas. Police sources said one of them carried a tube of ointment manufactured in Karachi, and some other medicines also manufactured there were recovered.
