Hughes given 'stay on execution' for July Ashes tour

Sydney, Thu, 14 Mar 2013 ANI

Sydney, Mar 14 (ANI): Australian cricketer Phillip Hughes has received a stay on execution which can secure his spot for the Ashes tour following his poor performance in the India Tests, scoring only 25 runs in the opening Tests in Chennai and Hyderabad.

After the axing of Shane Watson, Usman Khawaja, Mitchell Johnson and James Pattinson from the Mohali Tests for disciplinary breach, Hughes was reportedly the next on the list to be executed, News.com.au reports.

However, captain Michael Clarke said that pint-sized No.3 has been adjusting to conditions and is working as hard as any other player for which he deserved a chance to be on the squad.

Stating that Khawaja's loss is Hughes gain as Hughes can shut the door on Khawaja's Ashes dream with a career-defining innings in the third Test, Clarke further said that he is confident that Hughes' game will continue to improve, adding that he has the confidence to walk out and score a hundred.

According to Clarke, it has been a big change for the Oz squad from playing one-day cricket in their home grounds a month ago then coming and playing in foreign conditions in India. (ANI)
