Sensex closes flat; consumer durables, metal stocks plummet

Mumbai, March 11 (IANS) A benchmark index for Indian equities markets closed Monday's trade flat, as consumer durables, metal and automobile stocks declined. However, capital goods, healthcare and realty stocks were the major gainers in the day's trade.

The 30-scrip Sensex of the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), which opened at 19,679.88 points, closed at 19,646.21 points, down 32.02 points or 0.19 percent from its previous close at 19,683.23 points.

The Sensex touched an intra-day high of 19,754.66 points and a low of 19,602.71 points. The midcap index closed 14.35 points up, while the smallcap index was 17.56 points higher.

The wider 50-scrip S&P CNX Nifty of the National Stock Exchange (NSE) closed lower by 3.35 points or 0.06 percent at 5,942.35 points.

The BSE consumer durables index was down 100.07 points, followed by the metal index, closed the day's trade 53.22 points lower and the automobile index, was down 48.67 points.

The BSE capital goods index was up 58.32 points, healthcare 42.58 points higher and the realty index ended the day's trade 27.38 points up.

Only ten out of 30 Sensex companies were gainers, including Tata Power, up 2.28 percent at Rs.101.05; HDFC, up 1.91 percent at Rs.828.80; Sun Pharma, up 1.79 percent at Rs.832.90; Mahindra and Mahindra, up 1.10 percent at Rs.912.30 and Gail India, up 0.97 percent at Rs.344.90.

The major losers included Hero MotoCorp, down 2.51 percent at Rs.1,699.15; Wipro, down 1.35 percent at Rs.439.05; Bajaj Auto, down 1.33 percent at Rs.1,985.90; Jindal Steel, down 1.24 percent at Rs.362.70 and Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), down 1.05 percent at Rs.1,567.55.

Among other Asian markets, Japan's Nikkei closed 0.53 percent higher and Hong Kong's Hang Seng ended the day's trade 0.02 percent down. China's Shanghai Composite Index, closed 0.35 percent lower.

In Europe, Britain's FTSE 100 was down 0.01 percent, and the German DAX was trading 0.38 percent lower. The French CAC 40, was down 0.50 percent.
