Gurgaon, March 10 (IANS) Over a hundred people of all ages participated in a walk organized here Sunday to spread awareness about Glaucoma, an eye disease causing gradual loss of sight.

Gurgaon residents along with doctors and paramedical staff took part in the three-km 'Glaucoma Walk 2013' which was organized by the Fortis hospital along with Glaucoma Society of India.

According to Sanjay Dhawan, additional director, department of ophthalmology at Fortis, glaucoma is a leading cause of blindness but early diagnosis and treatment can slow, or even halt the progression of the disease.

"Glaucoma is a disorder in which the optic nerve which carries visual information from the eye to the brain gets damaged. Glaucoma can affect anyone, including newborn, children and elderly," he said.

"Through this walk, we wanted to create awareness around glaucoma and help people understand that walking lowers the intraocular pressure which in turn reduces the risk of glaucoma," he added.

Once the walk concluded, all the participants were checked for glaucoma by the hospital for free.
