New Delhi, March 8 (IANS) The Lok Sabha Friday expressed concern over the safety of women in the country with Speaker Meira Kumar calling for equal rights for them.
"Women still do not enjoy equal rights though it has been agreed in principle," the speaker said during a brief discussion on International Women's Day in the lower house.
Stressing on political, economic and social empowerment of women, she said that though the situation had changed in urban areas, women in villages still suffer from discrimination.
The BJP's leader of opposition in the Lok Sabha Sushma Swaraj said 2013 should be dedicated women's safety.
She also expressed concern over media reports that 96 percent women in Delhi are unsafe.
"Let us all resolve that we will protect our sisters and daughters," Swaraj said.
"There is no state where incidents of eve-teasing or rape are not rising," said Congress MP Girija Vyas.
Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal also expressed concern on the condition of women in the country.
"We live in a nation where 58 percent of women are still malnourished. The sad part is that Indians constitute 25 percent of the maternal mortality rate, where the mothers die during child birth. Hardly 60 percent of our women are educated," Badal said.
Concluding the discussion, the speaker said the house must pass laws for safety of women and keep a watch that they are implemented.
