Dharamsala, March 5 (IANS) Tibetan prime minister in exile Lobsang Sangay Tuesday congratulated Tibetan author and poet Tsering Woeser, the winner of the 2013 International Women of Courage Award of the US State Department.
"Despite facing great personal risk, Tsering Woeser has kept informing the rest of the world, including the Chinese people, about the issue of Tibet," Sangay said in a statement here.
"In a period marked by increasing self-immolations and protests in Tibetan areas of China, Woeser has emerged as the most prominent activist speaking out publicly about human rights conditions for China's Tibetan citizens," he said.
The International Women of Courage Award recognises women around the globe who have demonstrated courage and leadership, often at great personal risk, to promote justice and rights.
Since its inception in 2007, the International Women of Courage Award of the US Department of State has honoured 46 women from 34 different countries.
Woeser, who will get the ward in absentia, is among 10 awardees.
The Dalai Lama fled to India from Tibet more than 50 years ago and established his government in exile in Dharamsala.
