Bandipora (Jammu and Kashmir), Mar.5 (ANI): The infant mortality rate has come down in most parts of Jammu and Kashmir after the state government took steps to upgrade healthcare facilities under the National Rural Health Mission (NRHM) and infrastructure in rural areas.
Healthcare facilities for women in Bandipora District have witnessed a significant improvement.
The local administration has taken several measures to remove existing drawbacks, which has resulted in the revamping of health centres.
Mehjabeen, a Bandipora resident, said the NHRM scheme has benefited poor women, especially those experiencing difficulties during childbirth and neo-natal care.nly two infant deaths have been reported in the district this year so far.
The heath centre under the NRHM scheme organises periodical free mobile medical camps with all facilities, including ambulance services, blood tests, X-rays, ultra sound and dental care in several villages.
Medical Officer Samina said the scheme provides healthcare to infants and breast feeding mothers.
"The infant mortality rate has decreased. This year we had just two infants deaths, which is appreciable and very less as compared to what it used to be before the implementation of this scheme," said Samina.
Over the years India's public health and family welfare programmes have achieved notable gains.
The nutrition centres, and measures such as paying pregnant women to give birth in a clinic rather than at home, are part of the government's National Rural Health Mission (NRHM).t was started in 2005 to bring health services to people used to a choice between pawning jewellery for doctor's fees or simply suffering.
The scheme is intended to plug gaps in an older program that failed to reach children in the most critical first two years of life, educate mothers about nutrition and reign in corruption, which meant free food handouts went missing. (ANI)
