Patna/Chennai, Mar. 2 (ANI): Bihar Chief Minister Nitish Kumar on Saturday lashed out at the UPA Government over the recent hike in petrol prices, saying the other name of the ruling Congress Party at the Centre is inflation.
"Sometimes the price of petrol, diesel, rail fare is increased and sometimes the price of essential commodities is also increased. The other name of Congress party is inflation party. The prices will continue to rise till the party is ruling," he told media in Patna.
Meanwhile, the Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) supporters took to the streets in Chennai to vent their ire against the government over the petrol price rise. The supporters, who turned up in large numbers, also raised anti-government slogans.
G. Ramakrishnan, Secretary of Chennai unit of Communist Party of India-Marxist, said that the party condemns the Central Government's decision of increasing the prices of petrol.
"They are going according to the neo-liberal economic policies. They have kept the subsidy to the tune of 30,000 crores to petrol, diesel. So, the next day they have hiked the price of petrol to the tune of rupees 1.40 paise per litre. We are condemning this," he said.
Petrol price was yesterday hiked by Rs. 1. 40 per litre.
Petrol in Delhi now costs Rs. 70.74 per litre, while in Mumbai it costs Rs. 77.66 per litre.
The new rate of petrol in Chennai is Rs. 73.95 per litre, while in Kolkata it is Rs. 78.34 per litre
The rates have been revised following the rise in international oil prices and depreciation in rupee. The previous petrol price hike was Rs. Rs 1.50 per litre, excluding VAT, on February 16. (ANI)
