New Delhi, Feb. 27 (ANI): Communist Party of India (Marxist) leader Brinda Karat on Wednesday lashed out at the UPA Government after Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kamal Nath defended Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P.J. Kurien in connection with the Suryanelli rape case.
Karat said it is a matter of deep regret and also shame that the government should be so desperate to defend Kurien that it even erodes constitutional propriety and constitutional norms because there is a separation between the executive and the legislature.
"Kurien has been elected by the Rajya Sabha members. So, the government nomination is elected person of the Rajya Sabha. So, he is accountable, he has to make his own defence. How does the government come in to make his defence?" said Karat.
"Therefore, there is no impartiality of the chair if the chair is being defended in this way by the government. Therefore, I think it's another very unfortunate chapter in the Congress Party's drive to erode constitutional authority and constitutional arrangements in this country. And it sends a very bad message," he added.
Karat further said the Parliamentary Affairs Minister's statement was clearly a political move to defend Kurien.
"As far as Kamal Nath's statement, it is such a horrible statement which is so deficit in facts and it was clearly just a political move by the government to defend this man," she said.
Kamal Nath yesterday defended Kurien, saying there was no evidence against him in the Suryanelli rape case.
"A section of the media and some political parties have sought to drag Rajya Sabha Deputy chairman Prof. Kurien's name into this controversy. It is emphatically stated that Prof. Kurien has never been an accused in the case which is called the Suryanelli case, which has been remanded by the Supreme Court to the Kerala High Court for rehearing of the appeal," he said in a statement made in the Rajya Sabha.
The Left Parties have demanded Kurien's resignation as Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha in connection with this case.
Kurien's name figured again in connection with this case after the victim wrote to her advocate in Delhi to explore the possibility of filing a review petition, seeking a fresh probe against the Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman.
The girl had also written a letter to Kerala Chief Minister Oommen Chandy and Leader of the Opposition, VS Achuthanandan, demanding the probe against Kurien be reopened.
A total of 42 men were accused of raping the 16-year-old girl, who hailed from Suryanelli in Kerala's Idukki District. Brutally raped for 45 days, she was then told by the perpetrators to return home and keep mum. (ANI)
