Mumbai, Feb 26 (IANS) People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) Tuesday said the Drug Controller General of India has assured it that animal testing will be suspended till alternative methods are included in safety standards to test cosmetics.
At a meeting chaired by Drug Controller General of India G.N. Singh, PETA India's science policy adviser Chaitanya Koduri informed the members of Bureau of Indian Standards committee about the non-animal methods to test cosmetics.
The committee sets the standards for tests conducted by the country's cosmetics industry.
Koduri said G.N. Singh assured PETA that animal tests will be suspended until satisfactory validated non-animal methods are included in the current safety standards.
"PETA commends G.N. Singh for recognising that animals are no longer required for the safety evaluation of cosmetics. If the European Union and Israel can ban cosmetics testing on animals, so can India," Koduri told IANS.
He said more than 1,300 companies around the world have banned all animal tests for cosmetics.
