FA's anti-racism campaigner Paul Elliott quits after 'discriminatory' comment

London , Sun, 24 Feb 2013 ANI

London, Feb. 24 (ANI): Football Association's anti-racism campaigner Paul Elliott has resigned after making 'discriminatory abusive comments' at ex-Charlton player Richard Rufus.

The former Chelsea and Celtic defender allegedly aimed a racial insult via text at Rufus in an argument over a failed business venture.

In a statement, the FA's chairman David Bernstein said that Elliott's position was 'untenable' after the matter was reported earlier this week, Sky News reports.

Elliott served in the FA's judicial panel and as a nominated member of UEFA committees.

He was also a trustee of the Kick It Out campaign, a position from which he has also stepped down.

According to the report, the 48-year-old received a CBE for services to equality and diversity in football earlier this month.

A statement from the FA read that it has accepted the resignation of Paul Elliott from all roles representing the organisation.

The statement added that the move comes after a conversation in which discriminatory abusive comments were made by Elliott to Richard Rufus. (ANI)
