New Delhi, Feb 22 (ANI): The Supreme Court today permitted two Italian marines, accused of shooting dead two Indian fishermen off the coast of Kerala, to travel to their country to cast their votes in the upcoming elections.
This will be their second visit after the Kerala High Court allowed them to go home for two weeks during Christmas last year.
A bench headed by Chief Justice Altamas Kabir said that the accused marines would travel to Italy under the control and custody of the Ambassador of Italy in India, to cast their ballot in the elections scheduled for February 24 and 25.
The bench said that the marines-Massimiliano Latorre and Salvatore Girone-are only allowed to travel to Italy and remain there and will have to return to India.
On December 22 last year, the marines had left for Rome after the Kerala High Court permitted them to go for Christmas for two weeks. They came back on January 4 and surrendered their passports before a trial court in Kollam within hours of returning to India.
The marines were arrested on February 19 last for shooting to death two Indian fishermen-Ajesh Binki (25) and Jelestine (45) from onboard merchant vessel "Enrica Lexie" off Alapuzha coast, "mistaking" them for Somali pirates. (ANI)
