New Delhi, Feb 20 (IANS) An Indian delegation left for Male amid strained ties with the Maldives after deposed president Mohamed Nhasheed took refuge in the Indian mission there.
The four-member team from the external affairs ministry will "engage with all stakeholders" in the Maldives, official sources said.
A Maldivian court has issued a second arrest warrant against Nasheed, who has been staying in the Indian High Commission since walking into it Feb 13.
The Indian delegation will "basically engage with all the stakeholders and understand the situation and all the issues involved", a source told IANS.
The team is headed by Harsh Vardhan Shringla, joint secretary in-charge of the Maldives.
The Hulhumale magistrate in Male issued the new warrant ordering police to present Nasheed in the court Wednesday evening, the Maldivian media reported.
This would only be possible if Nasheed leaves the Indian mission or if New Delhi asks him to leave.
Nasheed's decision to take refuge in the Indian mission has cast a shadow on relations between India and the Maldives.
A section of the Maldivian leadership has accused India of interfering in Male's internal affairs. New Delhi has denied this.
