Washington, Feb 20 (ANI): Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority has launched its own "designated texter" campaign in an effort to decrease distracted drivers and increase safety and awareness about the danger of texting while driving.
Oak Ridge High School senior Trevon Cleveland said that when his friends are driving, he urges them to keep their hands on the wheel and away from their smartphone's keyboard.
"I always ask my friends if they want me to send a text while they're driving, because I don't want them to put my life in jeopardy," the 17-year-old student said.
Playing off the idea that texting while driving can be as dangerous as driving while intoxicated, the Orlando-Orange County Expressway Authority launched a "designated texter" campaign on Monday, the Orlando Sentinel reported.
"We're hoping that people will take action and make the pledge. The goal is to motivate others to follow that behavior," Expressway Authority spokesman Jeff Marshall said.
Federal highway-safety officials have also pushed the idea of designated texters - passengers who take control of a driver's smartphone and deal with any texts that might come in while the vehicle is on the move. (ANI)
