Nine Maoist guerrillas surrender in Jharkhand

Ranchi, Feb 18 (IANS) Nine Maoist guerrillas surrendered before Inspector General of Police (Ranchi Zone) M.S. Bhatia in Jharkhand's Khuti district Monday, police said.

Of the nine surrendered Maoists, seven belong to the People's Liberation Front of India (PLFI), a police official said.

The rebels surrendered with seven pistols, eight rifles, two carbine guns and live cartridges. Each of them was handed over Rs.50,000 as per the state government's policy. They will also be granted other benefits like land and house, according to police.

Two of the surrendered Maoists have been identified as Pankaj Munda and Sankarshan Sahu of PLFI.

Maoists are active in 18 of the 24 districts of the state.
