Women's World Cup: Australia post 260-run target

Mumbai,Sports, Sun, 17 Feb 2013 IANS

Mumbai, Feb 17 (IANS) Jess Cameron's 75 off 76 balls helped Australia post a score of 259 for seven against the West Indies in the final of the ICC Women's World Cup at the Brabourne Stadium here Sunday.

Shaquana Quintyne, 17, took three for 34 as the Australians threw away a good start and floundered in the final powerplay overs.

Openers Meg Lanning (31) and Rachael Haynes (52) got their team off to a rollicking start, reaching 52 runs in just nine overs.

After the fall of Lanning, Haynes strung together a partnership of 64 runs with Cameron to put Australia in the driving seat.

Cameron was in delightful touch as she carted the West Indian bowlers all around the ground in an innings that included eight fours and two sixes.

With the score on 177 for three at the end of 35 overs, the five-time champions looked well on their way to posting a big score.

However, things took a turn for the worse with the start of the batting powerplay. Reckless batting saw the Australians being reduced to 192 for six by the end of the 40th over.

Leg spinner, Quintyne, bowled in great areas and reaped the dividence of some poor shot selection by the Australians.

Australia though regained the initiative right in the end thanks to some lusty blows by captain Jodie Fields (36 not out) and Ellyse Perry (25), who had a partnership of 50 runs for the eighth wicket.

The West Indies, who have never won the women's world cup, had earlier defeated Australia in the super-six stage.
