Carl Hooper says 'if Cronje succumbed to match-fixing temptation, anyone could'

Sydney , Sun, 17 Feb 2013 ANI

Sydney, Feb 17 (ANI): Former West Indies skipper Carl Hooper has said that if fallen comrade Hansie Cronje's match-fixing demise proves then anyone can succumb to the temptation.

Hooper never encountered illegal betting activity in his 102-Test career from 1987-2002, but believes the claim that the sport is not tainted by the dark arts of organised crime is implausible.

Hooper said he wants to know that there isn't any match-fixing, but in light of developments over the past few years, it is naive to think it is not going on, News.com.au reports.

Cronje was banned from cricket for life in 2000 for influencing matches in collusion with Indian bookmakers stretching back to 1996.

He initially denied charges of corruption that were laid by New Delhi police and was even lauded for 'unquestionable integrity and honesty' by Ali Bacher before the former United Cricket Board of South Africa boss learned the truth that stunned the cricket world. (ANI)
