Kolkata, Feb 15 (INAS) Expressing lack of faith in investigations by the state police, the Congress Friday demanded a CBI probe into the death of a policeman during a clash with students here.

"We demand a CBI inquiry for an independent probe. All culprits should be booked, irrespective of their political affiliations," Congress MP and union Minister of State for Urban Development Deepa Dasmunshi said.

During her visit to the slain policeman's residence Friday, Dasmunshi said her party was against a probe by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the state police, which was handling the case.

Dasmunshi said that Kolkata Police Commissioner R.K. Pachnanda has been transferred to shield certain Trinamool Congress leaders.

"To protect some people, someone has to be removed. Police officers who are trying to bring out the truth are being removed by the state government. Earlier, Damayanti Sen was transferred and now it is Pachnanda," said Dasmunshi.

Former Joint Police Commissioner (Crime) Damayanti Sen was transferred after she cracked the sensational Park Street rape case, which Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee had dubbed as "fabricated".

Sen is now the deputy inspector general of Darjeeling range.

Dasmunshi's ministerial colleague Adhir Ranjan Chowdhury also disapproved of Pachnanda's transfer, saying it would affect the morale of the police force.

Pachnanda was replaced by Surajit Kar Purakayastha.

Sub-inspector Tapas Chowdhury was shot dead from close range while trying to control clashing students in West Kolkata's Garden Reach area Tuesday.

Twelve people have been taken into custody in connection with the killing.
