NHRC notice to Assam on panchayat polls violence

New Delhi,Politics,Immigration/Law/Rights, Fri, 15 Feb 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Feb 15 (IANS) The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) Friday sought from the home secretary and the director general of police (DGP) of Assam within four weeks a report on the deaths in violence over panchayat polls in the state.

The NHRC in a statement read: "Notice has been sent to home secretary, government of Assam, and DGP, who have been asked to submit a report on the matter within four weeks."

The NHRC issued notice on a complaint after a media report appeared, alleging that 11 persons died in violent clashes over panchayat polls in Assam.

"Out of the eleven, reportedly nine died in police firing and two in group clashes between the people who were opposed to the elections and those who supported it at different places," the NHRC statement said.

"The report also stated that the mob armed with lathis and iron rods blocked roads and attacked polling parties. The mob targeted the police and other paramilitary forces when they went to stop the violence," the NHRC said.

The commission observed that the contents of the media report, if true, would raise a serious concern over violation of human rights.
