Kolkata, Feb 14 (IANS) In a bid to lure international travellers into experiencing West Bengal's culture and heritage, the state tourism department is set to launch a mega tea tourism project in Sylee, an official said here Thursday.
The Sylee project will be spread over 90 acres and located amidst 12 tea plantations, state Tourism Secretary Vikram Sen said at a programme here.
"Tea tourism is a new aspect and we will promote it through the project," he said.
Besides, four other mega tourism projects are slated to come up at Gajoldoba (near Siliguri), Kolkata Eye (Hooghly waterfront), Kunjanagar (Terai-Dooars in North Bengal's Jalpaiguri district), and Jharkhali at the heart of Sunderban mangrove forests.
"We are at a sound position internationally. We have a pro-active tourism policy and to that effect we are planning five mega projects across the state," said Sen at the 'Destination East' meet organised by the Confederation of Indian Industries.
The projects will tap into the eco-tourism as well as adventure tourism potential of the destinations and give a much needed boost to infrastructure.
"Through the government's tourism policy we are trying to promote development of hotels across the state. Besides, there are three new airports coming up at Durgapur, Malda and Cooch Behar," Sen added.
