Thiruvanthapuram, Feb. 13 (ANI): Women activists took to the streets here on Wednesday, demanding a reinvestigation into the 17 year-old Suryanelli rape case and resignation of Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman P. J. Kurien over his alleged involvement in the case.

Under the banner of the All India United Mahila Sangam (AIUMS), the protesters staged a mass rally and demanded a judicial inquiry into the matter.

"The main issue we are raising here is the atrocities against the victim of the Suryanelli case. P. J. Kurien has also been accused and we want to bring him under judicial inquiry," said Kallada Vijayam, President of the Mahila Sangam.

Reportedly, the victim, a native of Suryanelli in Idukki district, was abducted and raped by different persons for around 40 days in 1996.

The victim had written to the Chief Minister Oommen Chandy, accusing Kurien as one of her tormentors and sought reinvestigation of his role in the case consequent to an order by the apex court.

On the other hand, Kurien had alleged that the main opposition Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) had raised the issue to gain political mileage in the upcoming polls.

The Deputy Chairman of Rajya Sabha claimed that he was acquitted in three inquires and by the Supreme Court six years ago. (ANI)
