Chennai, Feb 13 (IANS) The world is beginning to realize that human rights are being violated in Sri Lanka, DMK chief M. Karunanidhi said Wednesday.
Canada has announced plans to boycott the upcoming Commonwealth summit in Sri Lanka on grounds of human rights violations by Colombo, Karunanidhi said in a statement.
He said the New York-based Human Rights Watch had also demanded that Sri Lanka should not be allowed to host the summit due to its poor rights record.
All this showed that the world had started to realise the "atrocities committed by the Sri Lankan government headed by President Mahinda Rajapaksa", the former Tamil Nadu chief minister said.
He also hoped that the passage of a US-sponsored resolution on Sri Lanka at the UN Human Rights Council meet in Geneva will halt what he said was the razing of Hindu temples in the island nation.
The DMK and other Tamil groups in Tamil Nadu are highly critical of the largescale civilian deaths that took place in Sri Lanka when the military crushed the Tamil Tigers in 2009.
