BJP targets UPA over Augusta Westland deal for 12 VVIP choppers

New Delhi , Tue, 12 Feb 2013 ANI

New Delhi, Feb. 12 (ANI): Following the arrest of Finmeccanica CEO Guiseppe Orsi and two other Italian middlemen in the connection with Augusta Westland deal for 12 VVIP choppers, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has questioned the UPA Government for not showing interest in ordering an inquiry in the matter.

Italian prosecutors suspect that Orsi was involved in paying 68 million dollars in bribes to secure the contract for the sale of 12 Agusta Westland choppers to India in 2010.

"This is an absolutely a shocking case of VVIP corruption. And it is more interesting that the country, which is beneficiary in the deal, is investigation and taking action against their won people. They have even arrested the chief of the company, but here is the Indian Government, which stands defrauded, and is not interested in investigating the matter at all," said BJP spokesperson Prakash Javadekar.

"I had raised the question in December Session, I also wrote to the Defence Minister A. K. Antony, requesting to set up an inquiry on the basis of information available in the public domain. But, the government is not interested because they want to cover up each and every act of corruption," he added.

Meanwhile, the Defence Ministry has ordered a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) probe into the deal today. (ANI)
