Kolkata, Feb. 12 (ANI): A policeman was shot dead on Tuesday during a violent clash between the workers of the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) and the Congress Party outside the Hari Mohan Ghosh College in Garden Reach area of Kolkata, where nomination for the student's union election was underway.
According to the media reports, miscreants used bombs, brickbats during the clash and fired at the policeman on duty.
"There was no tension in the morning and nomination process was going peacefully. But one old criminal named Mukhtar, who was associated with the CPI-M (Communist Party of India-Marxist) earlier, and now with the Congress, opened fire at the policemen and shot dead one an official Tapas Choudhary," said Firhad Hakim, West Bengal Urban Development Minister and local MLA.
"The incident has nothing to do the students. It was the criminals from outside who opened fire and tried to disturb the election process. The administration will take proper action against the culprits and steps will be taken to flush out them from the area. The government will also take care of the family members of the deceased policeman with all sorts of help," added Hakim.
Hakim, who visited the area immediately after the incident, also said that he has informed the Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee about the violence.
A large number of policemen have been deployed to normalize the law and order situation in the area. (ANI)
