Priority of UP Government is to ensure safety at Kumbh Mela: Akhilesh

Etawah , Mon, 11 Feb 2013 ANI

Etawah, Feb 11 (ANI): Expressing grief over the Allahabad stampede, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav said on Monday that priority of his government is to ensure safety of devotees at the Kumbh Mela.

At least 36 devotees, retuning after taking holy dip at Maha Kumbh, were killed and many more injured at the Allahabad railway station in a stampede on February 10.

The tragedy occurred at the railway station, as thousands of devotees arrived to catch trains to leave for their respective destinations, leading to chaos and stampede.

"The most important issue for the government and the officials is to ensure that rest of the people, who are stranded at railway station or staying at the Kumbh after taking dip, should reach their home safely and without any harassment," said Yadav.

Taking moral responsibility, Minister of the UP government, Azam Khan resigned as head of the Kumbh management committee.

"Yesterday incident has hurt me. I, taking moral responsibility, have decided to tender resignation as the head of the Kumbh management committee. I have conveyed his message to the chief minister and you (reporters) as well," said Khan in northern Moradabad city.

Over 30 million pilgrims took a dip on the occasion of 'Mauni Amavasya', considered the most auspicious day during the 12-yearly congregation, at Sangam - the confluence of the Ganga, Yamuna and the mythical Saraswati rivers. (ANI)
