MRF Challenge: Jon Lancaster beats close field to take pole

Chennai, Feb 8 (IANS) Jon Lancaster of England claimed pole position ahead of championship leader Jordan King in the MRF Challenge F2000 qualifying at the Madras Motor Sports Club (MMSC) track here Friday. India's Parthiva Sureshwaren was ninth fastest.

Lancaster clocked 1:33.675 to edge out compatriots Josh Hill and 2012 F2 Champion Luciano Bacheta in a tight session.

Hill, making his debut in the final round of the competition, did well to post 1:33.842 while Bacheta was right behind at 1:33.867.

King struggled with his car throughout qualifying and came fourth setting 1:34.128. The Briton leads the championship with 100 points to American Conor Daly's 95. Daly was 13th fastest.

Alice Powell, one of the three females on the grid, was fifth with 1:34.302.

It was an action-packed session with Japan's Yudai Jinkawa spinning in front of Bacheta and King.

Sureshwaren led amongst the Indians with 1:34.971 while Parth Ghorpade was 12th recording 1:35.201.

Ram Kumar did not set a time in the 17-car grid and so did England's Rupert Svendsen Cook.
