Punjab official told to deposit one-third of arbitration fees

Chandigarh, Feb 8 (IANS) The Punjab and Haryana High Court Friday asked Punjab cadre IAS officer S.R. Ladhar to deposit one-third of the total arbitration fees of Rs.1.5 crore into the state government's arbitration account.

Ladhar has been in the middle of a controversy since last year for having charged a hefty arbitration fee for deciding land acquisition compensation cases of farmers.

After the Punjab government sought the money back, the Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer had challenged the move.

Under the rules of the department of personnel and training (DOPT), an arbitrator can charge a fee of Rs.500 per day.

A petition was filed before the high court by lawyer H.C. Arora seeking action against the IAS officer for charging money for deciding arbitration cases.

Ladhar, in his capacity as divisional commissioner of Jalandhar, had decided compensation cases of farmers for lands acquired by the National Highway Authority of India (NHAI).
