Chennai, Feb 7 (IANS) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Rajnath Singh Thursday faulted Prime Minister Manmohan Singh for not working out a consensus between Tamil Nadu and Karnataka on the Cauvery river water dispute by calling the heads of these two states for a meeting.
Speaking to reporters, Rajnath Singh, whose party heads the government in Karnataka, said the Feb 20 deadline set by the apex court for notification of the Cauvery Water Dispute Tribunal in the official gazette by the centre is nearing, and the centre has failed to work out a solution acceptable to both states.
The UPA government should handle the issue cautiously as the decision will have a serious impact on the inter-state relations, Singh warned, urging Manmohan Singh to call the chief ministers of Tamil Nadu and Karnataka and find an amicable solution before the tribunal's final award is notified.
The Supreme Court Thursday directed Karnataka to release 2.44 tmc (thousand million cubic feet) of Cauvery river water to Tamil Nadu for irrigating its standing crops in the Cauvery delta basin.
Queried whether the party would go on its own in the 2014 general elections, Rajnath Singh said the party's Tamil Nadu unit would decide on that and apprise the party as to the poll strategy.
He said he did not expect any problem for the BJP from its allies because of its Hindutva ideology, and ruled out the possibility of early general elections.
"The UPA will enjoy power till the last day of its current term," he said and added that the government has failed on all fronts - economy, diplomacy, strategy and security.
Condemning union Home Minister Sushilkumar Shinde's recent remarks blaming the BJP for promoting terror, Rajnath Singh said the party will not derail the budget session of parliament over the issue.
Rajnath Singh also charged the Indian government of compromising with Sri Lanka, even though the latter did little to rehabilitate Tamils living there.
