Sydney, Feb 3 (ANI): In the longest Davis Cup match in history, with a record duration of seven hours and two minutes, Czech Republic's Tomas Berdych and Lukas Rosol beat Switzerland's Stanislas Wawrinka and Marco Chiudinelli in a doubles clash.
The 6-4 5-7 6-4 6-7 (3-7) 24-22 epic match, which gave defending champions the Czech Republic a 2-1 lead in the World Group clash, had eclipsed the previous record of six hours and twenty-two minutes when John McEnroe of the US beat Swede Mats Wilander before the tie-breaks were contested, News.com.au reports.
The previous longest Davis Cup doubles had taken six hours twenty minutes, in 2002, when Argentinian pair Lucas Arnold and David Nalbandian beat Russians Yevgeny Kafelnikov and Marat Safin 6-4 6-4 5-7 3-6 19-17.
However, in a stark contrast, former champions Spain faced a humiliating exit in the first rounds as Serbia and France successfully sailed into the quarter-finals.
Serbia, the 2010 winners, reached the last eight for the fourth successive season when Viktor Troicki and Nenad Zimonjic, playing his 18th Davis Cup season, defeated Steve Darcis and Ruben Bemelmans 6-4 6-4 5-7 6-4 to secure a 3-0 win over Belgium.
Frenchmen Michael Llodra and Julien Benneteau teamed up for a doubles to move France into the quarter-finals as they beat Israeli pair Dudi Sela and Jonathan Erlich in a 7-6 (7-3) 6-1 6-0 match. (ANI)
