Mumbai, Feb.3 (ANI): England beat India by 32 runs in a Women's World Cup encounter at Mumbai's Brabourne Stadium on Sunday, a game that was marked by contrasting centuries by England captain Charlotte Edwards and India's Harmanpreet Kaur.
Replying to England's total of 272 for the loss of eight wickets, India scored 240 all out in their alloted 50 overs.
Edwards today became the highest run-getter in women's ODI history on the way to her seventh century in a Women's World Cup group game against India in Mumbai.
She needed 53 runs to claim the record at the start of the match, and overtook Australian Belinda Clark's landmark of 4844 runs when she swept legspinner Reema Malhotra for a single in the 25th over.
Edwards, 33, had led England to their third Women's World Cup title in 2009 and had spoken in the run-up to this tournament about another title being a crowning glory in a glittering career now in its 17th year.
For India, Jhualn Goswami and N.Niranjana claimed two wickets apiece.
Replying to the England total, Harmanpreet Kaur played a fighting unbeaten knock of 107 of 109 deliveries that included eight boundaries and two sixes. She was supported by K.V. Jain who scored 56 of 92 deliveries with five boundaries.
England fast bowler K.H.Brunt claimed four wickets for 29 of her nine overs to lead her team to a much needed win.
Edwards was declared player of the match. England had earlier lost its match to Sri Lanka, while India beat the West Indies. (ANI)
