Chennai, Jan 31 (IANS) After the central government failed to name the newly built domestic terminal of Chennai Airport after AIADMK founder and former chief minister M.G. Ramachandran (MGR), Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J. Jayalalithaa skipped its inauguration Thursday.
In a statement, Jayalalithaa said she received Vice President M. Hamid Ansari at the airport as per protocol.
"At the same time, since there was no favourable response from the central government to my request to name the second domestic terminal after MGR, causing anguish to me and the people of Tamil Nadu, I regret to inform that I am not participating in the inaugural," she said.
Jayalalithaa said she had written to Civil Aviation Minister Ajit Singh requesting that the new domestic terminal be named after MGR, who was the chief minister of Tamil Nadu from 1977 until his death a decade later.
