Mumbai, Jan.30 (ANI): With just two days to for the premiere of the much awaited movie, "Midnight's Children", filmmaker Deepa Mehta and author of the book on which the movie has been made Salman Rushdie presented the first look of it in India's showbiz capital Mumbai.
Mehta and Rushdie were accompanied by the cast of the film, including actors Shriya Saran, Shahana Goswami and Rahul Bose.
Rushdie was visibly impressed with the work done in bringing the vision of his film to life onscreen.
"I think this is probably the best shot the film would have had. Through the whole stage, many other people are responsible for that. Amongst those people who are not on this stage that one might mention is Giles Nuttgens, who is the extraordinary cinematographer. You have seen a little glimpse of his work. He kind of made it look like we had a 100 million dollars to spare, which we did not," Rushdie said.
The director of the film, Deepa Mehta, rued not being able to shoot it in India, saying that it had been more convenient to create the setting for the story in Sri Lanka.
The film, based on the lives of two children born within minutes of India's independence from British rule, also saw Mehta turn to the 'Natya Shastra' an ancient Indian treatise on theatre.
"We decided to shoot in Sri Lanka. The most important part of doing a film is pre-production, which is theme when you take a script, and you get together, and you create the vision that you have for the film. That meant preparation for the actors. We did extensive workshops, here in Mumbai, based on the Natya Shastra," Mehta said.
The novel on which the film is based came out in 1980, is touted to be one of the best works of magic realism in India's post-colonial era.
A winner of the Booker Prize in 1981, 'Midnight's Children' was also adjudged as the best book to have won the Booker since the award's inception, and also won the 'Booker of Bookers' prize in 1993. (ANI)
