Majority of women unaware of rights: Study

New Delhi, Jan 29 (IANS) Seventy percent of women in the national capital are unaware of constitutional and legal provisions made for them, a new study released Tuesday said.

A majority of women who were married before they turned 14 years old and some in the age group of 14-18 years were not aware of the legal age of marriage, the study released by industry chamber Assocham said.

The report said 43 percent of women still do not vote despite knowing about elections and their importance. Almost 50 percent of women are unaware of the most important economic fact of minimum wages and are being exploited.

Sixty-one per cent of women are not aware of medical facilities provided by the government and don't avail them while 71 percent of the families ignore or refuse to help exploited women.

Around 53 per cent have migrated from various states to New Delhi in search of work and education of children, mainly from Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Rajasthan and Madhya Pradesh, the study said.
