Hyderabad , Sun, 27 Jan 2013 ANI

Hyderabad, Jan. 27 (ANI): Police personnel fired teargas shells and baton charged protesting pro-Telangana students outside the Osmania University campus here on Sunday.

Hundreds of student had gathered outside the university campus gate and wanted to take out a protest rally to Raj Bhavan (the Governor's House), but police and paramilitary forces swung into action to disperse them.

The protesters alleged that a few of them had been injured.

Earlier in the day, Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) legislator K.T. Rama Rao and his supporters were arrested for defying a police ban to stage a protest over the demand for a separate state of Telangana.

According to television channel reports, TRS leaders were arrested near the office of the Telangana Joint Action Committee (TJAC) as they were gathering there to proceed towards Indira Park, the venue of their 36-hour-long protest.

Since Telangana was merged with Andhra state to form Andhra Pradesh state in 1956, there were several agitations in Telangana to invalidate the merger and to form Telangana state.

On December 9, 2009, the Government of India announced process of formation of Telangana state. (ANI)
