Jhargram, Jan 24 (ANI) The West Bengal Police arrested a suspected Maoist sympathizer, accused of killing a farmer, from Jhargram district of the state.

The farmer was allegedly shot in September 2012, when he saw some Maoists pasting posters in the village. This triggered panic in the area.

One of the accused in the murder Rabi Barik was arrested in October last year. The culprit revealed details about the other accused, which helped them to arrest Biswajit Mahakur on Wednesday.

"On 28 Sep 2012, at Bandhghora village Girish Sahis was killed and after that there was a rumour that this murder is linked with the Maoist incident. I want to brief press that on October 3, 2012, we had arrested Rabi Barik and on Wednesday we arrested Rupa Mahakur alias Biswajit Mahakur, who had shot Girish Sahis to which he has admitted," said Superintendent of Police, Jhargram, Bharati Ghosh.

He is likely to be produced in the Jhargram court on Thursday (January 24).

In the past few years, the rebels have stepped up their efforts against the government after various locals complained that Maoist activities such as extortion, abductions and killing had increased considerably in the area.

Hundreds of people have been killed and injured in the violence, perpetrated by the rebels as well as security forces in counter insurgency operations. (ANI)
