Activists demand land for vulnerable communities

New Delhi,Business/Economy,Immigration/Law/Rights, Tue, 22 Jan 2013 IANS

New Delhi, Jan 22 (IANS) Dalit land rights activists from across the country have demanded equitable distribution of arable land, especially for the landless and vulnerable communities.

A consultation organised by National Federation of Dalit Land Rights Movement (NFDLRM) and other affiliate state fora with support from ActionAid India drafted a Delhi Declaration Sunday and discussed strategies to achieve tangible success.

"Land for the poor and excluded communities, is not a commodity, it is an instrument of power, dignity and livelihood. Dalit, tribal, women and other landless communities have a right over the land. This right must be recognised and ensured by the state," said Amar Jyoti Nayak, leader, Land Rights Hub, ActionAid India.

Activists from all over the country promised to ensure that they would file claims for 2.5 million Dalit women in the next one year.

"A greater challenge and a more important step would be to create grassroots alliances. Land is a complex political issue and we must come together to raise the issue," said Vincent Manoharan, chairman NFDLRM.
