Mumbai/Surat, Jan 19 (IANS) US-based Verint Systems Inc. will secure Gujarat's diamond capital Surat via video surveillance and a security command centre with police, Verint said in a statement in Mumbai Saturday.

"The Safe City project is an investment designed to help ensure the safety of our people," Surat Police Commissioner Rakesh Asthana said.

The initial phase of the Surat Safe City Project comprises over a 100 closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras at all major traffic junctions and at critical entry and exit points in the city.

It will later cover more areas of the city, which has a population of around 45 lakh, by integrating the project with the proposed state government surveillance and command centre network in Gujarat's capital Gandhinagar.

A state-of-the-art command, control and communications centre with a 280 square foot "video wall" will centrally monitor, aggregate and analyse multiple surveillance feeds in police headquarters.

Surat is a commercial hub for India's diamond and textile markets and also home to a other key industries like engineering, oil and gas.
