Imphal, Fri, 18 Jan 2013 ANI

Imphal. Jan 18 (ANI): Driving commercial and public transport vehicles in Manipur is quite a challenge, as the state witnesses frequent blockades and shutdowns. And, many drivers have lost their lives in various incidents. To pay tribute to deceased drivers and to those who are handicapped while performing their duties, the 24th Drivers Day was recently observed here.

The day was organised by the Manipur Drivers Welfare Association at the Inter State Bus Terminus in Imphal.

Given the land locked nature of Manipur, the highways are the only option for bringing in a host of basic commodities to fulfill the daily needs of the people. However, the drivers face innumerable challenges ranging from physical violence and harassment, looting and extortion by underground outfits and killings during shutdown and blockades.

About 198 drivers have lost their lives in the last 24 years.

"Those (drivers) who are working for the general public of Manipur, to the best of their level, they have performed their duty without depending on the season, rain or cold, whether it is day or night. I appeal to general public and intellectuals to cooperate and help the drivers in the community," said Y Bhupendra Ghosh President, All Manipur petroleum Tankers and Drivers' Union.

Family members and drivers gathered at the event and paid floral tributes to the victims.

"I am grateful to the organization for organizing the event and we also appeal to the government to support us in this matter," said Thambal Devi, victim driver's wife.

These drivers are the unsung heroes of Manipur who risk their lives and selflessly perform their duties. (ANI)
