New Delhi, Jan 17 (IANS) Investigators are ascertaining if an insider was involved in a robbery in the house of an 82-year-old woman here the day before and seized CCTV footage of her neighbourhood, said police Thursday.
Two men robbed ornaments and cash from the house of Surjeet Puri in south Delhi's Defence Colony Wednesday.
"A search is on for the culprits," a police officer said.
"We are taking help of the CCTV cameras installed in the neighbourhood," the official said, adding that they were trying to ascertain if an insider was involved.
Puri is the mother of Deputy Permanent Representative to United Nations, Manjeev Singh Puri, and aunt of Permanent Representative of India to the United Nations Hardeep Puri. She is the wife of former chief secretary of Punjab S.S. Puri.
According to police, the two robbers rang the bell of her house Wednesday afternoon and said they were distributing some pamphlets.
She did not open the door completely and kept the safety latch on. When she tried to close the door, the two men forced it open, breaking the chain.
She was found when her driver came to take her to Gymkhana Club.
The robbers appeared familiar with her routine, police said.
The woman was taken to AIIMS for treatment of injuries to her face.
Puri told police that the criminals took away two gold bangles which she was wearing. Around Rs.20,000 were also taken away from a safe.
"The criminals were well aware about the fact that she would be alone at home for at least half an hour after coming back from a neighbourhood club," said the official.
