Indian Coast Guard detains Panama-flagged ship off Kochi coast

Kochi, Jan. 17 (ANI): Indian Coast Guard apprehended a Panama-flagged merchant ship, allegedly involved in the sinking of a fishing boat off the off kochi coast in Kerala, injuring three fishermen on Wednesday.

M.V. Izumo, the merchant vessel is allegedly involved in the incident which occurred at about 4 p.m yesterday about 18 nautical miles off Beypore near Calicut coast.

The three fishermen in the ill-fated country boat had jumped overboard and were rescued by other fishermen in the vicinity.

The ship was identified and escorted to Kochi by the Indian Coast Guard within four hours.

"I have eyewitness account of the fishermen that there were two ships in that area. I have some technical information from my sources, and it seems to be M. V. Izumo is involved in the collision," said T. K. Satish Chandran, Deputy Inspector General of Indian Coast Guard.

"The fishermen were waving their arms but the merchant vessel obviously didn't see. And when the collision was imminent, the three fishermen jumped off the boat. These three fishermen have been rescued but their boat has broken into two pieces and sank," he added.

The Remote Operating Station (ROS) at Fort Kochi-the user end of the radar chain was utilized to correctly identify the ship from among the dense shipping traffic in the area at the time By Juhan Samuel
