Madurai, Jan. 16 (ANI): People from around the country thronged the city of Madurai in Tamil Nadu to witness the traditional three-day bullfight event 'Jallikattu' on Wednesday.

Jallikattu is organised as a part of Pongal celebrations every year.

"We have come all the way from Andaman and Nicobar Islands to see this world-famous Jallikattu. This is a very famous festival for the bravery of youngsters. This was our long-cherished dream to come and see and enjoy this festival," said Senthil, a visitor.

"There is a lot of crowd, lakhs and lakhs of people have gathered here and we are thoroughly enjoying the event with family," said a local.

Fighters and muscular wild bulls- often pepped up with large amounts of homemade liquor, dash after each other on the streets of the city during the event.

Unlike the Spanish version of the sport, the aim is not to kill the bulls but to dominate and tame them, pluck away bundles of money or other treats tied to their specially sharpened horns.

The Supreme Court banned Jallikattu in 2007, saying it was cruel as fighters and spectators have been gored or trampled to death and number of injured fighters has often run into the hundreds.

But that ban was watered down, and the court said the event could be held under strict government vigil. (ANI)
