Pune, Jan 13 (ANI): Six decades of bilateral diplomatic ties between India and Germany was celebrated in Pune at the start of a 10-day 'Indo-German Urban Mela'.

Bollywood actress Bipasha Basu inaugurated the event yesterday, along with the Parliamentary Secretary to Germany's Federal Minister of Economics and Technology, Hans-Joachim Otto, by lighting a traditional lamp at the fair grounds, alight with 12 gem-shaped pavilions designed by German artist Markus Heinsdorff.

While the focus of the fair is on better urban planning, there are also provisions for musical events and a spread of Indian and German cuisine to draw more visitors.

Otto said that the event was a showcase to the excellent bilateral ties between the two countries.

"India and Germany have close links, getting better and better, closer and closer, and this Mela is a great event for us to show how the cooperation between India and Germany works. That means we work together, hand in hand, to improve the situation of the cities, to work together in arts, in politics, in economics," Otto said.

Otto further said that German investment in India was proof of strong ties, and that people needed to be made aware of that.

"The hope is that this Mela shows every one in Pune and in India that India and Germany have really good cooperation. They are working together and have close links, and that shows (when) German companies come to India. They have factories, they have offices, they have close cooperation and this is what we want to show to everyone here," he added.

The fair also boasts of a solar-powered aeroplane prototype, car simulators, road safety systems and a laboratory for children to perform science experiments.

It will also feature performances by renowned Indian musicians and bands such as Amaan Ali Khan, Raghu Dixit and Indian Ocean, among others.

The Indo-German Urban Mela is part of the celebration titled "Germany and India 2011-2012: Infinite Opportunities" that commemorates 60 years of Indo-German diplomatic ties. (ANI)
