Chandigarh, Jan. 13 (ANI): Taking potshots at assembly speaker Kuldeep Sharma over dismissing the petitions seeking disqualification of five MLAs, who defected to Congress after the 2009 Assembly elections, Haryana Janhit Congress chief Kuldip Bishnoi on Sunday said the decision would be challenge in the Punjab and Haryana High Court.
Addressing a press conference here after the speaker's decision, Bishnoi said that his party, the HJC, has never merged with any other political organisation.
"As the president of HJC, I assure you that this is the same party that Choudhary Bhajan Lal had started. We have never merged or intended to merge with any political outfit. We will challenge the speaker's decision in the High Court," he said.
The speaker's decision on the 14 petitions filed by HJC and Indian National Lok Dal (INLD) under the 'Anti-defection Law' comes on the last day of the three-month deadline set by the Supreme Court last year to dispose of the pleas against the five MLAs.
In the order, the Speaker held that the merger of five HJC MLAs into the Congress was correct.
The five HJC MLAs, Satpal Sangwan (Dadri), Vinod Bhayana (Hansi), Narendra Singh (Narnaul), Zile Ram Sharma (Assandh) and Dharam Singh (Samalkha), defected to Congress when the party finished five short of the half mark in the 90-member state assembly to retain power for the second successive term.
On November 8 and 9, 2009 five of the six HJC MLAs, except Kuldeep Bishnoi, defected to the Congress raising its strength to 45.
However, the Speaker, Kuldeep Sharma, said that his decision is according to the rules and as per the constitution of India. (ANI)
