Gurgaon citizens want parallel policing

Haryana,Crime/Disaster/Accident, Wed, 09 Jan 2013 IANS

Gurgaon, Jan 9 (IANS) Residents, RWAs, citizen forums and NGOs Wednesday came together at a workshop here in an effort to make the city safer for women and advocated a citizen police control room for parallel policing, an activist said.

The forum at Fortis Memorial Research Institute here was held to understand what initiatives need to be taken to improve the safety of women in the city. Social activist and retired IPS officer Kiran Bedi was the chief guest.

The workshop questioned police's ability to thwart crimes in Gurgaon and pondered on what ordinary citizens could do to help.

The discussion called for concrete steps to beef up security and safety for women in the Millennium City.

"We must create a citizen police control room for parallel policing by involving the RWAs (resident welfare associations), senior citizens, women, schools, colleges, corporates and private security guards," Kiran Bedi said.

She also talked about involving the National Social Service and National Cadet Corps and collaborative action comprising 6Ps: people, police, prosecution, politicians, press and prisons.

"Gurgaon citizens should get together to conduct social audits of functioning of police stations. By doing so, each constable will be answerable and accountable to the citizens" she said.

Dr. Dilpreet Brar, regional director, Fortis Memorial Research Institute said: "Women should empower themselves with self-defence mechanisms so that they can safeguard themselves. There is an urgent need for formulation of a crime prevention plan on the lines advised by Kiran Bedi."
