New Delhi, Jan 7 (IANS) The capital woke up to another chilly morning Monday with the minimum temperature settling five notches below average at 2.4 degrees Celsius. Flights and trains were affected due to dense fog.
Fog enveloped the city early morning with visibility dropping to around 500 metres at 8:30 a.m., while humidity remained high at 97 percent.
Towards the noon, the sun shone, but brought little respite from the cold.
"Temperature during the day is likely to reach a maximum of 13 degrees Celsius and the day will be clear," an India Meteorological Department (IMD) official said.
It was, however, marginally higher than the minimum recorded early Sunday, which was lowest in five years, at 1.9 degrees Celsius.
The maximum temperature Sunday was nine notches below the season's average at 11.8 degrees Celsius.
Dense fog disrupted flight and train schedules, and travellers to and from the national capital experienced delays with over 75 trains running many hours late. Over a dozen flights were delayed too.
"The low visibility procedure was initiated early Monday morning on the runway as visibility fell below 50 metres," said a spokesperson of the Delhi International Airport.
Railway authorities said that over 75 trains are running late due to fog in northern and central parts of the country. Over a dozen trains were cancelled.
