NASA, Pentagon sponsor 'aircraft of future' $35m high-tech zeppelin

New York, Jan 5 (ANI): A 230-foot long zeppelin, which could be the 'aircraft of the future' is being built under a contract of around 35 million pounds from the Pentagon and NASA.

The Aeroscraft, designed to carry up to 66 tons of cargo for the military, looks like it belongs on a '50s science fiction movie set.'

It sits in a 72-story blimp hangar on a former military base in California, where it is likely pointing toward the future of aviation, the New York Daily news reports.

Aircraft manufacturer Worldwide Aeros constructed the 36,000-pound prototype and named it Pelican.

According to the paper, the firm is hopeful that the aircraft, like its namesake, will take to its air despite its weight.

A report by the Los Angeles Times said that the Pentagon and NASA contracted the company of roughly 100 employees to build the Aeroscraft for approximately 35 million dollars.

According to the report, the developers still need to show that Pelican, which has a skeleton made of carbon fiber and aluminum, can be unloaded efficiently and maintain a firm shell without outside pressure, but most importantly, it must fly. (ANI)
